I recently created a couple scripts to handle backing files and updating files.

BackupFile.vbs will backup up a given file via commandline, add date and time to the filename, and place it in a folder of your choosing via the commandline or it will allow you to select the backup folder. If your second commandline argument is "default", it will place the backup in a subfolder called backup. Usage: BackupFile {sourcefile} {destination or "default"} the second argument is optional.

UpdateFile.vbs will compare the MD5 checksum of a source file and target file. If the checksum is different, the target file is renamed and moved to a subfolder called backup and then the source file is copied to the previous location of the target file. The zip file include the DLL required for the checksum comparison and another script to register the DLL. This script Utilizes the Xstandard XMD5.DLL. You can check it out here. http://www.xstandard.com/en/products/#md5
